Optical Waveguides for Biological Measurements

 

This project concerns the development of micro-optical waveguides for measuring parameter such as bacteria in drain fluid after an operation. The basic principle is that light is sent through the wave in such a way the tail of the wave is in the surrounding environment. The trapping of bacteria on the surface with therefore effect the passage of the wave and this can then be measured. One area of particular interest is the measurement of E-Coli in the case of colon leakage. This is a collaboration with the Erasmus Medical Centre.
