Metrology aspects of sensor-target interactions for inductive and capacitive displacement sensors

 

Metrology teaches us that measurement is an informative process, which, based on a physical experiment, delivers a measurement result. Energy conversion and/or energy transfer always accompany data acquisition and data transfer. This means that any measurement procedure disturbs the energy balance in the object of interest, and in this way introduces uncertainty in the measurement result. This fundamental principle is valid for inductive and capacitive displacement sensors, as well. Their operation is based on electro-magnetic fields, which exert force on the target and cause small displacements during measurement, especially when the target is a thin membrane.

This research project will deliver information about what is the relation between the measurement error due to the exerted force, and the other sensor features like: sensitivity, resolution, stability, power consumption. The study will be based on developed in our team advanced sensor interface solutions for inductive (Eddy current) and capacitive sensors.

The researcher will be part of an enthusiastic team of young researchers. His work will profit from the existing knowledge and experience in the team. The results of his work will be a valuable contribution to the team research efforts.

During the execution of the project the MSc student will obtain knowledge in the fields: inductive and capacitive displacement sensors, advanced sensor interface electronics, a range of demanding industrial displacement sensor applications, in-depth electronic and basic physical aspects of sensor design. He/she will get an experience in systematic investigation of the performance of advanced sensor systems.
