  • June 6, 2007 we had our annual Day Out.

First we went to the Hague to visit the museon to see the temporary exhibition "ROBOT ZOO"
We discovered animals function using huge robot models and saw how perfect nature is. The special characteristics of animals such as a giraffe, a rhinoceros, a bat and a chameleon are revealed using these robot models. How does a chameleon change colour? How does a giant squid move? And how does a fly walk across the ceiling? We watched how a model of a locust jumps using powerful springs and find out how a bat finds its prey in the dark using special echolocation equipment.

In the afternoon we went to the Island Goeree-Overvlakkee. First we lunched in restaurant "de Zilvermeeuw" of the fish auction. After lunch we had an excusrion in the harbour of Stellendam. We learned how to peel shrimps, a lot about all kind of fishes and catched some crabs.
Later this afternoon we went to the beach of Ouddorp for the real work. We trawl for fish, crabs, shrimps and all other sealife.

For dinner we went to restaurant "D'n dolle bear", also in Ouddorp. Also here it was very "gezellig" and the food was delicious.

As usual there are made a lot of photos. I put all the photos (whithout censorship) on a DVD, which you can borrow from me. I also made a selection for the web. Click here to see them.

The Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences (KNAW) started The Young Academy (DJA) in 2005 to bring young researchers in contact with colleagues from other research areas. The members come from all disciplines, have a certain scientific status and do not have their doctorate for longer than ten years.
  • After Kofi Makinwa last year - the Electronic Instrumentation Laboratory managed to produce the second "Simon Stevin Gezel" in a row: Michiel Pertijs!
On October 17th, the Dutch Technology Foundation (STW) held an Innovation Market in Utrecht, as part of its 25th anniversary celebration. During this event, three young PhDs, whose research had been funded by STW and who graduated last year, competed for the title of "Simon Steven Gezel 2006." Michiel Pertijs had the honour of being one of the three, and gave an overview of his work in a 15 minute presentation. After having seen all three presentations, the audience voted for the winner, and... they voted for him!
  • More awards in 2006:

  • Transistors under stress Mechanical stress affects amplification
An article about Fredrik Creemer's work in Delft Integraal
"Practically every modern Intel Pentium processor main board features a temperature sensor developed at Delft University of Technology. The sensor detects when the processor starts to become too hot, and switches on a fan to cool it down. As soon as the temperature drops to an acceptable level, the fan is switched off. The temperature sensor was developed by Dr. Anton Bakker, who in April 2000 was awarded his doctorate for his research on this subject (see also Delft Outlook 97.1), and subsequently put into production by Philips. Although the sensor performs admirably, it is still not perfect. It contains a temperature error that can be as much as a whole degree Celsius. Professors Dr. Paddy French and Dr. Gerard Meijer formulated a research assignment to find out what causes the error and it was Fredrik Creemer rose to the challenge and unveiled the mystery: transistors are sensitive to stress!"
