Optimising RF spectroscopy for multi-layer spectrum extraction in organ-on-chip applications
Dielectric spectroscopy (DS) is an electromagnetic sensing technology capable of extracting tissue properties and concentrations in organ-on-chip (OoC) applications. Conventionally, the obtained spectrum contains information of the bulk present in the sensing volume. Using state-of-the-art spectrum extraction techniques, this project aims to develop algorithms that extract the permittivity of specific layers in a stratified medium, identify the system sensitivity and optimize the probe design. This will allow for non-invasive analysis of complex multi-layered OoC tissues.
Assignment
This project is developed as a collaboration between ECTM (Dr. Mastrangeli) and ELCA (Dr. Spirito).
The project will include the following activities:
- A review of state-of-the-art microwave sensing and multi-layer de-embedding methods;
- Experimenting with multi-layered DUTs using an existing RF spectroscopy setup;
- Developing and validating algorithms for multi-layer spectrum extraction;
- Identifying and optimizing probe sensitivity and design;
- Reporting.

Requirements
You are an ambitious hands-on Master student with a background in microelectronic, RF or bioelectrical engineering, or computer science. You have an affinity for working in a multi-disciplinary context, including biology, RF engineering and (micro)fabrication. You have good communication skills in English, you are independent and a team player.
The graduation project will have a total duration of 9 to 12 months.
